What is Reading Anyway?

In chapter two, the author discusses ways to help students effectively comprehend readings in every content area. Reading is necessary in every area in school. A lot of the time students will be told to read material for the next class, and will be required to take a simple quiz on it. Students may be successful on that quiz; however, they may not be able to comprehend that text because they were not given the necessary tools to achieve that comprehension. It is important to use things such as prior knowledge to help students to actually be able to understand the texts they are given. Reading requires students to construct meaning while trying to connect these ideas to things they may already know. As a future teacher, it will be my job to effectively teach literacy in my math classes, so that students will be able to comprehend the material at hand. All in all, it was made evident that all subjects have to teach literacy in order for their students to completely understand what it is they are reading. However, how will teachers make time to use the effective literacy strategies discussed in the chapter? Many teachers are already crunched for time as it is to just teach their content area, and now they have to teach literacy in that content area. It makes complete sense of why teachers must teach literacy in their content area, but will they find the time to do that?
